What is Reiki?

Reiki (Ray-kee) is a Japanese word meaning universal life energy. Reiki is an ancient, hands on healing technique that helps to elicit the relaxation response and assists in restoration of the mind-body balance. Reiki encourages enhanced, integrated functioning of the body's healing systems. Self-healing can then take place on all levels-physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Reiki energy is subtle energy. Reiki energy comes from the Higher Power, which exist on a higher dimension that the physical world we are familiar with. The true source of Reiki energy is within ourselves.

What is the History of Reiki?

The use of Reiki energy dates back to 2500 BC in Tibet. It was rediscovered in the mid 1800's by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan. It was brought to the United States by a Japanese woman living in Hawaii, Hawayo Takata and is now being taught worldwide.

How is a Reiki Treatment Given?

In a standard treatment Reiki energy flows from the practitioners hands into the client. The client is usually laying on a massage table but treatments may be given in a chair or standing. The client remains fully clothed. The practitioner places his/her hands on or near the body in a series of hand positions. These include positions around the head and shoulders, the stomach, and feet. Other, more specific positions may be used based on the clients needs. Each position is held for three to ten minutes depending on how much Reiki the client needs at each position. The whole treatment usually lasts 45 - 60 minutes.

What does Reiki Treatment Feel Like?

What one experiences during a Reiki treatment varies somewhat from person to person. However, feelings of deep relaxation are usually felt by all. In addition, many feel a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and surrounds them. As the Reiki energy encourages one to let go of all tension, anxiety, fear or other negative feelings a state of peace and well-being is experienced. Some drift off to sleep or report to have a feeling of floating. At the end of the treatment, one feels refreshed with a more positive, balanced outlook.

What Can Be Treated with Reiki?

Reiki has a positive affect on all forms of illness. This includes minor things like head or stomach aches, colds, flu, tension and anxiety as well as serious illness like heart disease, cancer etc. In addition, it helps alleviate the negative effects of chemotherapy, post operative pain and depression as well as improving the healing rate. Stress reduction in ones physical and psychological condition are what most experience.

Why Reiki?

Fifteen years ago, I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, a chronic muscular pain/sleep disorder. To complement western medicine, I found Reiki as a self-healing modality promoting muscle relaxation and quality of sleep. It has brought me to "homeostasis" which is a state of inner balance, peace and harmony. With this connection of the body, mind and spirit, my healing journey began and has brought me much inner joy, peace and acceptance.
